About Me

👋 Hey there! I'm Bruce and over the past 20+ years I've learned that great writing is about becoming your audience. When you become them, you experience all their pains and struggles. Then you can write your way out of it and help them avoid the same pain. Turns out most developers would rather maintain jQuery than read the docs. I get it. So I try to keep it simple. But simple is hard. It takes time that's not easy to find. Ultimately, if a sleep-deprived developer can't understand my docs at 2 am, my docs aren't good enough. I fail a lot. But I keep trying.

My Journey

2006-2018

TOPAZ Technologies

Senior Product Designer / Developer Support

At TOPAZ, I evolved from visual designer to full-stack product strategist. I led comprehensive UI overhauls of legacy AngularJS applications, trained development teams on Angular Material best practices, and managed end-to-end product marketing strategies.

This role taught me the importance of bridging the gap between technical capability and user needs— a philosophy that continues to drive my approach to developer experience today.

2001-2005

Schlumberger

Senior Technical Writer / API Documentation Specialist

My foundation in technical writing was built in the oil & gas industry, where I wrote API documentation and training guides that enabled 100+ global developers to adopt complex systems quickly. I also built UI prototypes in C#/WinForms and integrated systems with SQL Server databases.

This experience taught me that great documentation isn't just about explaining what something does—it's about understanding why someone would want to use it and removing every possible barrier to their success.

My Philosophy

I don't just write the docs

I build tools, craft interfaces, and create explanations that click. Understanding how things work from the inside makes all the difference in explaining them clearly.

Spark 'aha' moments

The best documentation doesn't just inform—it transforms confusion into confidence, complexity into clarity, and hesitation into action.

I code. I design. I connect.

Great developer experience happens at the intersection of technical accuracy, visual design, and human psychology. I work in all three spaces.

Reduce friction, increase flow

Every tool I build and every guide I write has one goal: help developers get from question to solution as smoothly as possible.

Beyond the Code

When I'm not crafting documentation or building developer tools, you'll find me exploring the latest in web technology, contributing to open-source projects, or mentoring aspiring technical writers. I'm energized by teaching and lifting others through shared knowledge.

Based in the Austin, Texas metropolitan area, I thrive in remote team environments and have been successfully working remotely for 5+ years. I believe the best developer experiences are built through diverse, distributed teams that bring different perspectives to solving complex problems.
